This is my third year participating in the annual rooftop show coordinated by Christopher Palacio Dance Project. I will be performing in two trios: an original work by Jerica Niehoff and an original piece I choreographed.
Every January, NACHMO (National Choreography Month) challenges choreographers, dancers, and movers of all types to create a new dance piece in one month. This winter, 237 people in over 20 cities took the challenge, sharing excerpts of their work and process on social media and in live events across the country. These shows feature a curated collection of diverse works crafted by New York choreographers for the NACHMO challenge.
I will be performing with Movement of the People Dance Company in the premier of a new evening-length piece called "Song and Dance You" as part of FLICfest 2016 at the Irondale:
Song and Dance You dissects the sociocultural and sociopolitical constraints that circumvent the underlying remnants of our nation’s racial divide. The multimedia and multidimensional choreography will incorporate contemporary dance theater with house dance, vaudeville and early modern jazz movements from the age of Minstrel shows. Seeing to find a balance of sardonic humor with poignant foundations of contemplative yet powerful visceral movements, Song and Dance You will answer the question – what does it take for Black lives to actually matter in the eyes of all Americans?
